Design Philosophy

U.S. Submarines, Inc., was formed specifically to develop submarines that overcome the disadvantages of existing submersibles and submarines. These disadvantages are, in summary:

Research submersibles

  • small size, very cramped interior
  • severely limited range and endurance
  • base aboard expensive support ships required
  • generally old technology

Military submarines

  • very high acquisition and operating costs
  • high number of skilled crew required
  • no viewports, with no retrofit possibilities
  • cramped spaces and complex systems
  • designed as a weapons platform

Tourist submersibles

  • battery powered only
  • low speed, endurance and range
  • dependent upon support boat
  • high maintenance due to external equipment
  • high drag coefficients

U.S. Submarines has overcome the disadvantages of the three classes of vehicles to produce a revolutionary new type of vehicle with these advantages:

  • exceptional maneuverability
  • excellent depth capability
  • superior viewing
  • hydrodynamic efficiency
  • excellent speed, range and endurance
  • good surface stability characteristics
  • low maintenance requirements
  • luxurious internal space
  • contemporary technology
  • ease of operation

As a consequence of this philosophy we have developed the only designs suitable for personal luxury submarines, yet the designs themselves are based on the innovative adaptation of demonstrated contemporary technology.

Our luxury submarines are all capable of diving to 305 meters (1000 feet) and remaining submerged for days at a time. On our larger boats fully equipped galleys, marine toilets and showers are included in the luxurious interior arrangements. Large acrylic viewports provide spectacular subsea viewing, and automated life support and climate control systems maintain comfortable cabin conditions at all times.

On the surface the Nomad-, Seattle- and Phoenix-class submarines are powered by twin diesels and have extended cruising capability, as well as the ability to recharge their batteries and high-pressure air tanks while underway. Integrated roll stabilization insures a comfortable ride while surfaced, and hydrodynamic efficiency maximizes speed and endurance. Two vertical and two lateral thrusters provide exceptional maneuverability, while major maintenance items are easily accessed from inside the pressure hull, reducing maintenance cost and time requirements.
